A bolt is a type and form of fastener that is usually made from metal. It often has a head on one end, a channel at the other, as well as a shaft with an outer helical ridge, known simply as a ‘thread.’ Bolts, serve to hold material together or position objects.
The chamfer on the head at the opposite end provides slightly beveled edges that allow for the inserting of the bolt and nuts. Bolts usually require nuts, which are applied via torque. The bolt must be held in position or vice versa. Vibration and dynamic loads can cause nuts to become loose. Locknuts, lock washers, or thread lockers may be required to prevent this from happening.
Bolts & screws
Sometimes, the terms ‘bolts’ and’ screws are used interchangeably. While the distinction between them can seem complicated, a bolt can pass through the materials it’s fixing together (typically into the nut at the opposite side), while a threaded screw goes directly into them.
Bolts are typically made of steel. If corrosion or weather resistance is required, they can either be galvanized or stainless, brass, zinc, or titanium.
Types Of Bolt

Typically embedded in concrete, masonry to support applications.
It is used to attach metal or timber to metal. The head has a square undercut which helps to hold the bolt in place once it is tightened.
An elevator bolt is used to attach conveyor systems. It has a flat head, plain or countersunk that holds the bolt in its place when it is tightened.
This type of bolt, also known as frame bolts or bolts with a washer at the undercut of its head, distributes the bearing load.
This bolt comes with two threaded ends, instead of a header. The other has a wood screw.
Hexagon bolt/Tap bolt
A hexagon bolt consists of a head-on six sides with threading that goes part-way down the shank. In contrast, a tap bolt’s shank has threading running the length of the bolt.
